This is truly shaping up to be Israel and the lobby’s winter of discontent, or fall anyway.
First, AIPAC launches a full-court lobbying effort to get America to bomb Syria, sends hundreds of braying and bribing lobbyists to Capitol Hill, falls on its face, changes NOT ONE VOTE, and Obama decides not to bomb.
Then Iran launches a peace initiative, starting with the announcement by President Rouhani that Iran has no intention of developing nuclear weapons. And Rouhani and Obama reveal they have been in contact, with Obama telling Rouhani that he has a way to end the nuclear standoff.
And then there is Vice President Biden who will be keynoting the J Street Conference later this month. True, J Street is hardly different than AIPAC; it supports Israel’s attacks on Gaza and opposes UN recognition of Palestine. No matter. To AIPAC, J Street is worse than even Al Qaeda because Al Qaeda (1) does not invite top administration speakers to its conferences and (2) doesn’t lure AIPAC donors away from the Mother Ship.
As for Jeremy Ben Ami. He may look harmless to you but to AIPAC, he is as diabolical as Walter White, almost on the level of the worst enemy of the Jewish people in 5000 years, Peter Beinart. And he’s got Biden to bloviate at his conference!
But don’t count AIPAC out yet. Netanyahu is going to the General Assembly at the end of the month where he intends to draw a new red line with an extra thick Magic Marker. Then he will say the name Hitler, and glare at the delegates for a full minute without blinking. Then he will nod ominously leaving almost unsaid the dread word: Holocaust.
Following this UN triumph, he will visit Obama at the White House, where Obama will greet him with a welcoming speech in fluent Hebrew professing love for Israel. Netanyahu will barely smile.
Inside, Bibi will get down to business. He will tell Obama that either the United States agrees to go to war with Iran or the Knesset will BOTH defund Obamacare and refuse to extend the debt limit.
After Obama takes that in, Netanyahu will issue the ultimate threat. Israel will put conditions on its acceptance of the U.S. aid package.
Unless the U.S. goes to war with Iran and pledges to continue Kerry’s negotiations until the end of Obama’s term, and then blame the Palestinians for their failure, Israel will not accept the $3.5 billion. Period. There will be no aid. None.
Netanyahu will not wait for an answer. He will exit the White House whistling, knowing that no mere president can stop him, AIPAC or no AIPAC.
He’s the man.
