I have long believed that the governments of USA and Israel welcomed and encouraged terrorist attacks against their people because, so it seems to me, they like the pretexts for (expensive) military action that terrorist acts are deemed to provide -- and Israel and the USA both manage their affairs in large part to secure profits to enormous (and enormously profitable) arms industries.

That means that USA's policy sets up -- and by reading, deliberately so -- feedback loops whereby we attack in the Middle East, killing many innocent civilians, and then we suffer retaliatory terrorist attacks (rarely but occasionally here at home) and then we attack again and again, because, "Gosh! Terrorism must be destroyed!", and then they hit us again, and then we hit them again.

There'd be less killing if we spent all that money on school teachers, stopped bombing and droning, and let things simmer down. But simmering down is not in the game plan of the arms industries. Or the generals who, upon retirement, go to work in -- Yes! -- the arms induistries.

Will the thinking change in Washington re:the M.E. and the Muslim population? We hope so, but hope is not change! The Empire is a bully, until it fails. The Washington think doesn't seem to understand the way Muslim think is, (they carry a grudge long after the initial infraction), while Washington's is "out of sight, out of mind". That all this regime change will haunt the U.S. into the future, can be viewed as written in stone. One only has to look at the animosity between the Sunni & Shia to see they have long memories.

If the US government is hell bent on destroying the remnants of its global hegemonic status, than so be it. It will take far more than bombing a few suspected nuclear sites to bend Iranians to their knees.

Short of an amphibious operation the Hormuz chokepoint will be closed to oil tanker traffic. US and Israeli air and naval operations alone cannot open and secure the Hormuz gulf to tanker traffic. And time will not be on America's side as the Iranian military and the products of their 'military industrial complex' prove tougher to defeat than imagined. Global opprobrium from diplomatic resistance and economic sanction lead by Russia and China will isolate the US, Israel and anyone stupid enough to ally with us. And the devastating economic & job killing effects of losing 40% of the world's petroleum production will have Americans on their knees screaming for an end to hostilities.

In living memory Iranians have suffered a million casualties in the Iraqi/Iranian war and had everything thrown at them except the nuclear bomb. The Iranians have a record of proven steadfastness. The 'few, the proud and the brave' are not enough in number to save America this time. The vast hordes of Bubba's and Shrub's that characterize the unmanliness of Boomer & Gen X America will break and run, and once these vermin start running there will be no stopping them.

In the wake of such an event the US will find its hands full just trying to remain a hemispheric power in its neck of the woods. Israel will be 'alone,' (as they often stupidly claim) and will truly know for the first time what it means to be 'alone' in a hostile world without a big brother. But there are greater perils than a finished Israel. In the aftermath of such a failure, those US politicians that today profess such undying, eternal love and loyalty to Israel will be blaming Jewish/Americans as the whipping boy, fall guy, the ideal scapegoat to feed to the clamoring mobs in hopes of saving themselves from the murderous angst and ire they so richly deserve.

Can't happen? Just attack Iran.

"There is no possibility of serious negotiation so long as Binyamin Netanyahu is prime minister of Israel."

I believe Obama made this same calculation several years ago, and has basically given up on a Middle East peace deal. Poor John Kerry is just window dressing. Politically Obama is almost certainly correct, and he has other fish to fry in his second term. But morally his decision is disgusting!

Of course, Kerry and Obama should immediately talk loudly about this rebuff: ask AIPAC and its puppets in Congress how this advances ANY US interest. And then announce that the automatic UNSC veto is taking a vacation, since Israel has left no path to peace (or justice : recall "just and lasing peace" in UNSC 242) other than direct pressure on Israel.

Well said MJ. Professor 'dish it out' Dershowitz really likes that hate motif. I've read where Dersh figures the "Jews" not following his dictates, are "self-loathing Jews. I find the notion a bit confusing. There are any number of personal quirks that I wrestle with, and those quirks are regrettable and probably loathsome. What is a person to do? As for Jimmy Carter, his criticism of Israel is valid. Meaning of course that Dersh can't deal with his own failings as a human being. The man is mean-spirited at best.
Once upon a time, I got into one hellacious debate with Laura Rozen that used to write for Mother Jones. We argued the "legitimacy" of Israel. Speaking strictly about the UN process of the era and UN rules of order, my argument negates any legitmacy. Of course Rozen went ballistic. I am an unmitigated and raving antiSemite. Her words.
For the record, I have NEVER spoken an 'anti' word about the Semite people. It is a given that about the only Semite people remaining on this Island Earth would be the Palestinian people. Wow, that really sent Rozen into a bout of histrionic and accusatory epithetery. Spencer Ackerman likes to use the "antiSemite" branding as excuse for avoiding discussions about Israel and dual-citizenshipped Americans. Any rationale in a storm of controversy I would venture.
I like the notion of 'Israel Firster'. Sets off the Zionistas like you wouldn't believe. It's funny when Abe Foxman gets all hot under his stuffy collar and starts to spit as he screams. Horowitz is pretty funny as well. I think they bring the negativity on themselves.
Anyway, thank you for enlightening a doofus 'goyim' such as myself.
peace and respect,
